Success Stories

Our products can be used for research. Here in this page there're some examples of the use of our products.

Sometimes our products are used for our meteorological partners..

Usage of NWC SAF products in IPMA

IPMA (Instituto Portugues do Mar e da Atmosfera) uses NWC SAF GEO SW package v2021.2 to process GOES and HMRW satellite data to detect clear-sky scenes which will be used in the operational production of a new versión of geo-ring land Surface Temperature dataset. This is done in the framework of the Copernicus Global Land Service. Moreover, several NWC SAF GEO MSG products (e.g. cloud top height) are used operationally by IPMA for nowcasting in several areas (e.g. aviation).

IPMA also uses NWC SAF GEO/PPS SW to process MSG, MSG-IODC and EPS to detect clear-sky conditions as a crucial input to the LSA SAF products generation.

Usage of NWC SAF products in AEMET

AEMET (Agencia Estatal de METeorología) uses some NWCSAF/GEO products as a mark to assimilate MSG radiances (in a coming future, MTG radiances). These products are CT and CTTH.

It's important to AEMET to know which pixels, from MSG WV radiances, are not contaminated by cloud. The not contaminated radiance pixels are assimilated in HARMONIE.

Participation in EUMETSAT-FMI Aviation testbed

FMI has organized in order to improve the use of meteorological satellites for aviation, Experts Workshops and Forecaster Testbed. Some topics are icing, low clouds and fog & turbulence.

In these activities, some NWC SAF products are used, like ASII-TF, ASII-GW and HRW for Turbulence testbeds; CTTH, CMIC and ASII-ICE for Icing topic, and CT and PPS Cloud base (demostrational) in testbeds with Fog & Low Clouds as topic.

FMI and EUMETSAT believe in the importance of sharing knowledge and communication between both, experts and forecasters. Besides, there has been a positive feedback about the NWC SAF Products.

Below, you can find a photograph of one of those Testbeds.

PC and PC-Ph improve the accurate Precipitation measurements.

Suitability of MSG SEVIRI as an ADB (auxiliary-data-based) comparing with CML (commercial microwave links).

It's been investigated two SEVIRI-derived products PC and PC-Ph as an ADB rain event detection method.

SEVIRI data has been compared with TSB (time-series-based) methods and it's been proven the suitability can be said it's an advantage that ADB methods don't rely on extensive validation.
